Mark Thomas's Manifesto
So, last week I took the lovely Anne to the latest show from agit-prop comedian Mark Thomas.

It was fun, and I was in the aisles laughing at times. Part of this show's gimmick, however, is to ask people to contribute and vote on to a People's Manifesto, basically a list of policies you'd want to see if you were in power.

The full list is here, but the two from the show I was at were:

1: There should be an age of consent of 16 for all religion.

2: Introduce a recall of MPs so if 10% of constituents sign a petition to recall the MP they have to stand again.

Now, both are quite flawed as ideas (and bear in mind that 1 started out as a rather oppressive proposal to ban all religion and was worked on), but it's fascinating to see what comes up. (Especially given that though the sample of people at the show are 'People who find Mark Thomas funny', some of the proposals aren't exactly left wing.

Still, I'd be curious to hear what those of you out there in LJ land think of the whole thing. (It's Friday...)

I'll back 1, adding a certificate of religion - you need to pass a test ensuring you understand the basics of several major religions before being able to choose one.

I think 2 needs a higher percentage of the electorate.

Are you differentiating between religion and faith?

*nods* That's where my reservations began as well. Choice is the issue here, people should have the oppourtunity to develop there own belief systems on their own terms.

Thoughts on faith here, by the by.

Faith can be stupid and dangerous, but not as stupid and dangerous as religion, and it's also less easy to pin down.

I'd be especially pleased to see an age of consent enforced on those religions which require their members' members to be mutilated. Informed adult consent by the subject (not parents) should be legally required for any irreversible surgical procedure that isn't immediately medically necessary.

I think some of those are comedy gold, seriously. Others are just woefully misinformed. I was amused by the fact that, on the associated press news feed, this post appears just above a post about Thatcher breaking her arm. Lol.

I am *so* sick of people treating religion this way. As if it's any less damaging than people raising their children to believe that all black people are stupid or any other thing. It's my belief that every single parent/caregiver/guardian/whatever brainwashes their child, and that's not alterable, anyone who thinks they don't/won't is kidding themselves. And saying that your beliefs and culture are more acceptable than anyone else's is supreme arrogance - which is what ticks me off the most.

What makes your belief that a religion is wrong more valid than anyone else's belief that it's right? "Because I am right" is not a valid response. *rolls eyes*

*nods* It does suprise and sadden me that so many people seem to think that they can't be a religious bigot if they're an atheist.
